| -Never
put your home address OUTSIDE your luggage. Use a
business address if at all possible. |
| -If
you must wear a watch, make it an inexpensive one.
Leave expensive jewelry at home. |
| -Make
photocopies of your passport and credit cards and
keep these photocopies separate from the
originals. It is also a good idea to leave a
copy of your passport with someone at home in case
the copies also get lost. |
| -Always
leave your passport in the hotel safe. |
| -Take
as little cash as possible. It is better to
take traveler's checks and use credit cards for
purchases. ATM cards are also very
accessible in foreign countries. |
| -Divide
your cash and stash it in two-three places so that
even if your pocket is picked, you won't lose it
all. |
| -When
you plan to walk anywhere unfamiliar, ask the
hotel concierge if your intended route is safe. |
| -Don't
exchange currency on the street. Always do
so at an official exchange facility such as a
bank, hotel cashier or exchange booth. |
| -Always
try to blend in with the local people. Dress
as they do and try not look out of place by your
clothing. A baseball cap and white tennis
shoes in Europe will clearly identify you as an
American. |
| -Always
conduct yourself in a manner that conveys to
others that you know exactly what you are doing
and where you are going even if you are lost. |
| -Never
leave bags unattended in airports or public
places. |
| -Never
allow a stranger to "leave" something
with you when waiting in an airport. |
| -Never
accept packages from casual acquaintances to
deliver to someone at home. |
